We Are What We Read I felt compelled to write about this topic as I am reading more than I ever have, enhancing my life and others with more meaning in life (both personally and professionally) and applying what I am learning with deeper intent than ever before. My message to you is that we are what we read! I would like to bring three benefits of reading to your attention that you might not have considered before. The first benefit I will outline is that reading strengthens your natural intelligence. We all want more in life (time, wealth, relationships, with the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits) but what are we all prepared to do about it? A second benefit of reading is the ability to create your own reality; versus getting sucked into the plug-it-in drug we call TV. And finally, a third benefit of reading more often, is that too much TV actually rots your brain. My wish, after you read my article, is that you begin to not only read more often, but share such growth with the people you love. Deal…? I LOVE great quotes and wanted to share one to make my first point: You’ll be the same year after year except for the people you meet and the books you read. Ask yourself right now, what book are you reading, and why? Are you reading for fun and amusement/ entertainment? Are you reading for personal development, enrichment, and enlightenment? AND what book are you reading for professional development? Attaining success in any part of your life is harder without the attempt of such personal accountability. Wouldn’t you agree that our mind is our greatest gift we posses as human beings. Like they say, we are what we eat. We also are what we feed our minds. If we can truly achieve anything in life, then it is fair to say that it is key to feed our minds with resources to help us achieve what we want. Gandhi once said: A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes. To illustrate that and highlight a second benefit of reading … I personally stopped reading a few years back thinking I was too busy. I knew I had to read to keep up with trends and new ideas, but feel now as a result of not reading I stopped growing and learning and that is never good for anyone. I am now committed to a higher level of living, learning, growing and reading and feel great knowing where I am going as a result of the books that I am reading. As a result, I find reading helps me enjoy my own reality and can say with confidence that life is so much more rewarding. Did you know that 85% of North American households did not buy a non-fiction book last year! AND that 90% of people who actually do buy a book, did not even read it!!! Yet we spend 85 BILLION on movies, and average TV consumption in North America is 6 hours and 44 min. per day. I am not preaching by any means that you should not watch TV. But rather be more selective on what you watch… Be smart about it, and help your family be smart about it. By reading instead of watching TV, you are connecting at a higher level with yourself, creating emotions, and interacting with your higher self to earn a more creative and rewarding experience. And finally the last benefit of reading is like the experts say: TV rots your brain. Scientists have proved that TV alters your brain-waves – our most precious asset. The brain functions on 4 different levels: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta. Beta is the brain wave we are all using at this moment. Conscious, logical, interactive, and engaging… As we relax, our minds produce more Alpha waves, which we then open ourselves to more receptive, influential patterns of thought processing. TV slows such waves down to Alpha. Now Cory you’re probably saying, I lead a stressful life, and feel I need the TV time to de-stress, slow down, and unwind. Well in fact, you are slowing down, and actually getting addictive as well, as the feeling is so good, but in fact, you are actually ending up into a hypnotic like, so would say, comatose state, open to TV’s negative impressions, stereotypes, advertising and messages (even worse before going to bed, and unconsciously processing it for 6-8 hours). No wonder so many people are stressed, tired, overweight, and lack the energy to function these days. I guarantee that if you want a more fulfilling relationship, to sell more travel and make more money doing it, to be healthier, and more spiritual, you will not get there watching more TV, versus reading more books. In conclusion, we really are what we read. By reading more often, with more intent, enjoyment, and deeper meaning, we connect to ourselves in a natural way that feeds our minds to help us achieve what we intend to accomplish in life. Don’t forget… All great leaders are great readers!
